Please join us for our LAST PTA meeting of the 2019-20 school year – and Mary’s final PTA meeting as our undeniably committed, measured, and outstanding leader!
Join us via ZOOM on Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m.: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89033904775.
Please bring your favorite beverage of any type so we can toast the end of what has got to be one of the strangest and most challenging school years any of us can remember. (Not kidding about the toast.)
At this meeting we’ll also be talking about the start to next school year (what we know at this point), presenting the draft PTA budget for next year (it gets voted on in September), and voting on next year’s PTA officers. Hope to see you there!
Are your kids in a reading slump? Here’s your answer: a selection of brand new titles at your fingertips, available June 1-12.
R.E.A.D. is a nonprofit that supports economically vulnerable children in Arlington with their buy a book, give a book model. Every book purchased gives 20% back to McKinley AND a book to a child in our community.
Selections appeal to early readers through middle school.
Families can choose from regular or Book Bus delivery – all contactless.
SHOP ONLINE – and support McKinley’s PTA – at THIS LINK – June 1-12!
At checkout, add a note that you are a McKinley family. You will find “Note to Seller” at the last step of the check-out when reviewing your order.
Our super social worker, Cherelle Washington, shared that some McK families are experiencing difficulty paying for transportation to run essential errands (including, in one case, getting to a COVID-19 testing site). She’s asked if the PTA could set up a fund where we could help defray the cost of taxis, Ubers, etc. for families who need to make these kinds of trips. She will dispense the funding–I am just the money collector. If you’d like to contribute, please Venmo @Mary-Kadera or PayPal me at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll keep this open through next Tuesday.
As you probably know, the School Board’s approved budget for FY21 cuts the funding for elementary schools’ Exemplary Projects by half. We’d definitely like to preserve as many aspects of our Kaleidoscope arts integration initiative as possible, including our wonderful partnership with ETC. In order to do that and offer two plays next year, we’re going to have to ask families whose students are involved in the two ETC productions to pay a participation fee of $30/student per play. Scholarships will be available.
The Cooperative for a Hunger Free Arlington (CHFA) has an opportunity to expand free meals that Bayou Bakery is providing. They offer a plant-base meal of rice and beans, fruit, and greens up to 5 days a week. Their funder, Real Food for Kids, now has a truck that could deliver the meals to the Westover area. CHFA is investigating possible sites in Westover to serve as the distribution/pick-up location.
CHFA reached out to explore if the McKinley and/or Swanson PTAs could staff this location. The details are still getting ironed out, but if you’d be interested in helping, please email Mary.
Staff Appreciation Week starts on My 4 and there are 3 things the PTA is working on. But they require your participation! Please share these with your kiddo(s) and I hope you will join in. Entries needed by this Saturday, May 2.
Mission #1: We’re going to make a fun video for the McK staff to thank them for all they do. I am collecting pictures of McKinley students and families to put in this video. It would be great if you could make a sign or a picture and hold it in the photo. It could be an emoji, a hashtag you create, some words, a heart, or something else. Please email photos to: email@example.com.
Mission #2: We’re going to do something extra-special for our FLES/Spanish teachers, Senoras Byrne, Avila, and Malks. APS is making some changes for next school year and it’s possible that elementary schools won’t have FLES anymore. If this happens (we’ll know in May), then we might not have a chance to thank our Spanish teachers for everything they’ve done for us, and to say goodbye to them in person. I would love it if you could write a letter, draw a picture, or make a card for your Spanish teacher. You can make it in English and/or Spanish. Mail these to Mary Kadera at 901 N McKinley Rd, or drop it off in a plastic bin on her front steps that is labelled “FLES.”
Mission #3: We’re creating online “walls” where you can post messages to McKinley staff members. This is using a program called Padlet and you can add your message using the links below. Please feel free to add messages to as many of these “walls” as you like!
